How do you react when God speaks to you?

The Bible gives us two completely different reactions from people who have heard from God.

The first example is Zechariah. Zechariah was a priest and he’d been praying for a long time to have a child with his wife, Elizabeth.  Then, one day, when he was in the church, alone, the Archangel Gabriel came to him and told him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. ¹⁴ He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth…”

So, how did Zechariah react?  He doubted.

He said to the angel Gabriel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

And then, what happened?

The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. ²⁰ And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.” Gulp.

And that is what happened. Zechariah was muted, until Elizabeth gave birth.

Now, let’s look at another example:

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was just a teenage girl, living in the poor city of Nazareth, when Gabriel, the same angel, appeared to her and told her that she was to become the mother of the savior. Mary, momentarily paused and wondered how she could conceive, as she was a virgin. But instead of continuing down that road of doubt, she chose to trust in the will of God and answered the angel, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38)

So, how do you see yourself reacting? More like Mary or Zechariah?

When God puts something on our hearts, we may feel scared and be tempted to argue, overthink, or even not believe. But remember, God always triumphs, and He will do what He promises. As the Angel Gabriel stated, “… no word from God will ever fail.” (Luke 1:37)

When He speaks, will you listen?

When you Hear what He says, will you obey?
